RT3: Journal Article

My journal article is a systematic review with meta-analysis of RCTs and discusses therapeutic approaches to atrophic vaginitis in postmenopausal women. I have encountered several patients that were postmenopausal complaining of atrophic vaginitis which involves vaginal dryness, dyspareunia and vaginal irritation/pruritus or overall vaginal discomfort due to the decrease in estrogen level. The study compared several therapeutic agents on  6 major complaints of atrophic vaginitis; superficial cell, parabasal cell, vaginal pH, Dyspareunia, vaginal dryness, and endometrial thickness. Of the therapeutic agents which included hormone replacement therapy using estrogen, tissue-selective estrogen complexes(TSEC – bazedoxifene), estriol, and natural products such as soy isoflavone; Ospemifene which is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) had the greatest therapeutic effect on all 6 major symptoms of postmenopausal atrophic vaginitis.
