Surgery H&P + Article

The Journal Article I chose A meta-analysis comparing open anterior component separation with posterior component separation and transversus abdominis release in the repair of midline ventral hernias assess the difference in outcome between the two different component separation techniques. A meta analysis of seven studies included 281 cases of posterior component separation for midline incisional hernia and six studies included 285 cases of open anterior component separation was conducted. Analysis revealed no significant difference between hernia recurrence rate or in wound complication.

The patient in the H&P I included underwent an open anterior component separation approach. The surgeon informed me that posterior approach is more challenging approach and may be associated with more complications however according to the article, the posterior approach is as safe as the anterior approach with comparable levels of hernia recurrence.
