Effectiveness of Treatment Modalities on Kidney Stone Recurrence

The Journal article I chose Effectiveness of Treatment Modalities of Kidney stone Recurrence was published in 2017 in Chicago. Sine the patient in my H&P had a recurrent episode of nephrolithiasis, I wanted to see what preventative measures were available. According to the article, preventative measures include lifestyle and pharmacological intervention. Acetohydroxamic acid is the therapy of choice for struvite stones which are triple phosphate or calcium magnesium ammonium phosphate. Those with calcium stones are usually associated with hypertension and/or osteoporosis and may benefit from low sodium diet or thiazide pharmacologic intervention. Patients with uric acid stones benefit the most from urinary alkalization in order to get urinary pH to a target of 6.5-7. There is limited evidence for cystine stone disease preventative measures of recurrence. An important key factor in all stones regardless of cause if the urine volume, in which if it it minimal, stones have a better chance at forming, that being said, increasing urine volume by hydration is a great conservative preventative measure. Again, as always its important to take into account the patient as a whole which includes comorbidities and the type of stone. It is also important to go over side effects of any intervention.
