It was extremely important to me that I get the best and most out of my third rotation OB/GYN as I entered PA School with an interest in that field. My first two weeks were clinic days where most of the patients came in for their annual exams and so I got to do many pelvic, speculum and breast exams. My third week was OB overnight oncall which consisted of three 16 hour shifts. During that week I was able to follow up with expecting mothers who were in active labor and observe 7 natural spontaneous vaginal deliveries with midwives and doctors as well as the epidural process with an anesthesiologist. My fourth week was GYN overnight oncall which also consisted of three 16 hour shifts and most of the patients I encountered were expecting mothers complaining of abdominal pain or vaginal bleeding. More often than not, those patients were experiencing spontaneous abortions and so it was important to learn how to approach such a sensitive topic and explain to the patients what was going on. Whenever it got slow on GYN call, I’d head to labor and delivery to check on expecting mothers and see if I could observe more vaginal deliveries. My last week was day time GYN call and so the mornings consisting on rounding on postpartum patients and checking wounds/incisions on patients that were s/p cesarean section. Overall, it was a great experience; I learned the most from Carlos Melendez PA-C who allowed me to see patients on my own and even practice writing up notes.
